Mary Creagh MP, as Nature Minister, is leading on the Government’s work to strengthen rainforest protection. New rules, announced during London Climate Action Week, will ensure products sold in the UK do not play a role in illegal deforestation around the world.
The proposals mean UK businesses, specifically those who trade in commodities sourced from rainforests such as soy, palm oil, cocoa and rubber, must check that their supply chains do not contribute to illegal deforestation. These products are commonly found in everyday supermarket products including coffee, rubber, cocoa, chocolate, oils, shampoo and cosmetics.
Tackling global deforestation is an effective way to address climate change and protect some of the world's most unique and precious wildlife. Rainforests are vital for storing carbon and protecting wildlife, yet they are increasingly threatened by deforestation.
In 2023, UK consumption was linked to approx 29,000 hectares of deforestation. Eliminating products linked to illegal deforestation not only helps to protect precious ecosystems but is good for collective resilience and long-term prosperity.
For families in Coventry, these actions mean more confidence that the everyday products in their shopping baskets aren't contributing to the destruction of rainforests.
