Mary Creagh MP announces plan for smarter use of Government land
Mary Creagh MP announced the plan during London Climate Action Week
During London Climate Action Week (LCAW), Minister for Nature, Mary Creagh, set out new plans to use Government land to support nature recovery, climate adaptation and resilient public services.
The Government Estate Nature Plan sets out a new, coordinated approach to government land in England to deliver bigger, better outcomes for nature, resilience and public value. This will cover over 577,000 hectares across 24 departments and is backed by an initial £4.1 million investment.
The Government is the largest landowner in England. It is leading by example by applying the Land Use Framework to its own estate. This will mean that land is managed more strategically to deliver for nature, to strengthen resilience and to help protect critical public services from climate impacts.
Mary Creagh MP said:
“As the largest landowner in the country, government has a unique opportunity to work with others to show how nature can be restored at scale while delivering essential public services.
“This new plan is the first of its kind globally and will ensure progress towards our goal to protect 30% of our land and seas by 2030.”
