Discussion with Trade Minister Saves Auto Industry Jobs in Coventry and West Midlands
John Slinger MP for Rugby, Paulette Hamilton MP for Birmingham Eddington, Secretary of State Jonathan Reynolds MP, Mary Creagh MP for Coventry East &, Preet Kaur Gill MP for Birmingham Erdington
Mary met with the Secretary of State for Business and Trade, alongside other West Midlands Labour MPs who have many constituents who work in the auto industry and related supply chains. The following day, Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that the UK was the first country in the world to reach a tariff reduction deal with the US, which will save world-class export businesses and safeguards jobs with companies such as Jaguar Land Rover (JLR).
This economic prosperity deal with the US, part of Labour’s Plan for Change, protects UK industry, with a preferential tariff rate reduced from 27.5% to 10%, for at least 100,000 vehicles exported to America. This is a huge vote of confidence in Britain, British industry and British workers - especially in the West Midlands, the industrial heart of the countyr.
