Commemorating VE Day in Coventry
Mary Creagh MP with 101 year old Jack Mayhew, Sgt. Richard Brock and Minister for Veterans Al Carns MP in Coventry Cathedral
I attended the launch of the Torch for Peace at Coventry Cathedral, organised with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. The torch was an important part of the parade in central London to honour our armed forces three days later.
I was proud to pay tribute, in the House of Commons, to Coventry’s contribution to the war effort, and our city’s importance as a centre of peace and reconciliation as it rose from the ashes of the November 1940 Blitz.
This Labour government is proud of our serving Armed Forces, our veterans, and their families, for the contribution they make to our country. We have announced a new UK-wide veteran support system, called OPERATION VALOUR, to ensure veterans have easier access to essential care and support. We are providing £50million for new network of VALOUR-recognised support centres in every nation and region of the UK to unleash veterans’ full potential. VALOUR will work with health, employment and housing charities to shape more tailored local support.
