My statement on the ongoing situation in Iran

There will be many people from the Iranian diaspora who are overjoyed at the downfall of the murderous Iranian regime but deeply concerned about what comes next.

I support the government’s decision not to join the initial offensive action but now it is clear that to protect British interests and British lives we must act in self-defence. Iranian missiles and drones have indiscriminately attacked UK allies in the gulf, including our RAF Akrotiri on Cyprus. This has put British service personnel, holidaymakers and citizens abroad at risk.

With around 300,000 British citizens in the gulf region, people are advised to shelter in place and register their presence locally via the Gov.uk website to receive further updates.
