The King’s Speech

Mary Creagh MP in central lobby with Secretary of State Emma Reynolds

Wednesday May 13 was the official opening of the second parliamentary session under this Labour government. King Charles III spoke to assembled Peers and MPs in the House of Lords, setting out the government’s priorities and legislative agenda for the coming year.

Strengthening economic security is at the heart of government strategy, with laws to protect critical industries and act decisively to alleviate the cost-of-living crisis for families. This will be done through bills on European Partnership, Nuclear Regulation, Competition Reform, Highways Financing, Steel, and Clean Water.

The Government will continue to empower children and working people to seize opportunities, building on the work of the previous session, such as the lifting of the Two Child Benefit cap and the Renters Rights Act. New bills will include action on Education for All, Commonhold and Leaseholder Rights, and Social Housing Renewal.

In addition, the new session will see a strengthening of this country's energy security to help families with their bills and improve our resilience to energy price shocks. The Energy Independence Bill and Nuclear Regulation Bill will protect the country from global instability.

The Labour Government will take on extremism and deliver a firm but fair immigration system. It will return a sense of national security and control to working people, and build back pride in communities through bills that will strengthen national security, cyber security, our armed forces and immigration systems.

The Tories hollowed out the state with austerity, the Labour government is rebuilding it. This Government will create stronger public services that support working people and create a more resilient country. This will be done through an NHS Modernisation Bill, Digital Access to Services Bill, Public Office (Accountability) Bill and a Police Reform Bill.
