Second wild release of beavers is ‘dam’ good news
Mary Creagh MP releasing beavers with two National Trust executives (C. Beaver Trust)
Mary Creagh MP, Minister for Nature, was in Dorset today for the second release of wild Eurasian beavers.
Beavers were indigenous to the UK, however were hunted to extinction 400 years ago. They create wetlands which are havens for wildlife, reduce flood risk and improve the water quality of rivers.
The reintroduction of beavers into the wild has been carefully managed by Natural England following the first successful reintroduction last year. It is another critical milestone for the Labour Government’s plan to protect and restore nature in our country.
Minister Creagh said:
“It was a privilege to witness beavers returning to Somerset. These extraordinary creatures are brilliant for biodiversity, reduce flood risk and improve water quality in our rivers".”
“The return of beavers is a vital part of this government’s mission to protect and restore nature and we’re working closely with local communities to maximise their benefits.”
