Climate and nature statement by Mary Creagh MP

Mary Creagh MP makes a statement on climate and nature to the House

Mary Creagh MP, Minister for Nature, made a statement to the House of Commons on the nature and climate crisis (see above). She spoke about the importance of nature to human life, and the threats facing our climate and ecosystems.

The Labour Government is stepping up to tackle the threats to nature. The Environmental Improvement Plan is a roadmap to tackle the nature and climate crisis, reach restoration targets, improve public health, and support sustainable growth. This includes £500 million for landscape and nature recovery across England and £85 million to improve and restore peatlands. The Land Use Framework sets out how to use the land and seas we have more effectively to achieve our priorities across economic growth, housing, food production and climate and nature recovery.

The recently published 30by30 Delivery Plan will help reach the UK government commitment to effectively conserve and manage 30% of our land and seas for nature by 2030. £90 million, the largest ever Government investment in threatened species recovery, will help protect England’s most threatened native wildlife. Three new National Forests and nine new river walks will bring nature closer to people’s lives.

This is in combination with a record £2.65 billion pounds funding for flood resilience and £1 billion pounds for national biosecurity infrastructure. A £30 million pounds Wildlife-Rich Habitat Fund will help restore and create vital habitats. An additional £37 million pounds a year for the next three years will be provided for National Parks and National Landscapes.
