Today, the Labour Government has announced the Environmental Improvement Plan (EIP).
The EIP is the Government’s plan to put our natural environment on the road to recovery, packed with actions that will create a better future for England’s nature rich habitats, waterways, and air.
In contrast to the previous Government’s efforts, the Labour Government is publishing transparent delivery plans, detailing the concrete steps that will be taken to deliver key targets, backed by a funding boost of £500m for landscape recovery projects.
Mary Creagh, MP and Minister for Nature, said:
“This Labour Government has already made significant progress in protecting nature. I was proud to have reintroduced beavers into the wild and announced the launch of our new national forests. The Environmental Improvement Plan is the latest nature-protecting announcement; a clear and detailed pathway to restoring our natural environment for future generations, whilst also growing our economy. “
In Great Britain alone, nearly one-in-six species are threatened with extinction, 97% of wildflower meadows and half of hedgerows have been lost, and rivers and lakes suffer record levels of pollution.
The EIP will restore nature, reduce harmful pollutants in the air, tackle ‘forever chemicals’, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve access to nature, and cut waste.
