New Recycling Rules Introduced to Simplify Bin Collections

New recycling rules have come into force across England. From the 1st of April 2026, households across the UK will have collections for:

  • Food and garden waste

  • Paper and card

  • Dry recyclables such as glass, metal and plastic

  • General rubbish

These changes will enable consistent, streamlined collections across the UK as well as boosting recycling rates and cutting the amount of waste sent to landfill. Coventry City Council has already received nearly £2.7 million to cover vehicles, containers and other new expenses, so this investment does not fall on council taxpayers.

Defra has also announced that Councils in England will receive £1.1 billion to improve recycling services, fully paid for by packaging producers under the new Extended Producer Responsibility for Packaging scheme.

Mary Creagh MP, Minister for Waste said:

“We are ending the bin collections postcode lottery and making it easier for people to recycle wherever they live.  Simplifying these rules will cut out carbon, clean up our streets, and help bring pride back into our communities.”
