Mary attacks Tory/Lib Dem broken promises

Wakefield MP Mary Creagh has joined the national campaign to attack the Tory-Lib Dem Government's broken promises on protecting frontline public services.

The Labour campaign calls on David Cameron and Nick Clegg not to break the promise they made to voters to reduce the deficit without hitting the frontline or hurting the poorest.

The Tory-Lib Dem government's plans to reduce public spending by £6 billion this year includes:

Abolishing the Future Jobs Fund, which means over 40,000 fewer jobs for young people at risk of long term unemployment this year.
Scrapping 10,000 planned university places for this September.
Ending the Child Trust Fund, taking nest eggs away from four million children over the lifetime of this Parliament.

Mary Creagh MP said: "Cameron and Clegg promised their cuts would not hit the frontline or hurt the poorest. But just weeks into government and they have already broken their promises.

"The Future Jobs Fund gives young people the chance to work and get themselves off benefits. Abolishing this makes no sense at all, especially when there are 770 young people out of work in Wakefield who Labour was committed to helping.

"Last year 6971 Child Trust Fund accounts were opened for new babies born in my constituency. I am disgusted that the youngest and poorest in society are first in line for Tory/Lib-Dem cuts.

"No one is against genuine efficiency savings. But these cuts are not only economically dangerous, but damaging to the future of millions of people in our country."

Just days before the election, David Cameron and Nick Clegg said they would protect the frontline when reducing the deficit:

"Any Cabinet minister, if we win the election, who comes to me and says 'here are my plans and they involve front line reductions' will be sent back to their department to go away and think again."
