Work begins to rebuild Thornes Park

Work has begun to rebuild the aviary at Thornes Park.  Council contractors have started to dig the foundations of the new aviary this week.  The new aviary will be built through co-operation between the Friends of CHaT parks, Wakefield Council, local businesses and the local MP.

Mary Creagh MP has been holding a series of meetings about the priorities for action in the park. She wrote to local and national businesses asking for their help in getting the new aviary built.  Howarth Timber on Doncaster Rd has kindly offered to supply the timber at cost price.  The Ings Road Homebase store has also agreed to donate wood to allow the building work to go ahead. 

Representatives from Howarth Timber and Homebase joined Mary, the Friends of CHaT parks and the Council on site this week to look at how the plans are progressing.

Mary said “I’m delighted that local businesses have come forward with offers of help in getting the aviary rebuilt.  I'm grateful to Wakefield Council for providing the bulk of the funding but there was a shortfall which these two businesses have helped us to bridge. The Council and Friends of CHaT parks are working hard to make sure that the much loved aviary in Thornes Park is rebuilt for future generations to enjoy. Work on the foundations started this week and we hope the work will be complete by the start of the summer.”
