Mary says "End Violence Against Women"

The Government launched an ambitious strategy to end violence against women and girls on 25 November. Wakefield MP Mary Creagh attended the launch and pledged her support for the new plans. She also lent her support to the White Ribbon Campaign to stop male violence against women.

Much has been done over recent years to increase protection for women and to punish their attackers with new legislation, extra resources and front-line training. The new government plans will increase focus on prevention so less violence against women and girls occurs in the first place.

Mary said "It is unacceptable that every year a million women suffer from domestic violence. Through this strategy we are setting out how we believe together we can end violence against women and girls – with renewed focus on protection and support, and a new focus on prevention."

The Prime Minister Gordon Brown said: “Violence against women and girls is an obscenity. That is why we are taking action to bring perpetrators to justice and protect and support victims. A fair and responsible Britain has no place for violence of any sort.”
