Mary Joins Local Police in Wakefield Rural

Pupils prepare to hand out warning letters to motorists with help from the local police and Mary.

Mary went on parking patrol with the local police and young people at St Mary's School, Charles Street last week. Pupils from the school donned police uniforms and distributed road safety advice and leaflets to motorists around the school gates.

The young people had decided to take action against speeding motorists driving past their school and parents parking dangerously. The Police also helped the children get up to speed on the Green Cross Code.

Schools Liaison Officer PC Mick Amos said: "St Mary's has a particular problem with parking - and more so with drivers going too fast in the area.  Getting Kids involved is always effective - a lot of parents saw the children first and then took more notice."

"It was also great to have Mary take part. People wanted to know what she was doing."

Mary said: "I was delighted to see our neighbourhood police working with staff and pupils at St Mary's. The children really enjoyed dressing up - one girl even 'arrested' her brother! As the clocks go back we need to make sure parents chldren and drivers all take extra care on the roads."
