Calling All 4 Year Olds

Mary is encouraging Wakefield children to take part in The London 2012 Children's Promise scheme.

The scheme, launched during the bid to host the 2012 Games in 2004, will see children participating in an event or ceremony surrounding the London Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Every child that was born in the UK on 20 December 2004 is to be given the chance to take part. Over 700 four year olds have already been registered on the scheme. Each year the Olympics committee marks their birthday in a different way.

Children wishing to participate have until 31 March 2009 to register their details.

Sebastian Coe, Chair of the London 2012 Organising Committee, said: "The children and their families are on the journey with us as we work towards the summer of 2012."

Mary Creagh MP for Wakefield, said: "Although London is the host city of the Olympics, the games will benefit the whole of Britain. This is a great opportunity for Wakefield's children to get connected to the 2012 games. I am contacting the Council's registrar to see if they will help us locate local children who may be eligible. I am sure that an opportunity such as this will inspire more local young people to take up sport, which will improve their health and wellbeing."
