Wakefield Samaritans mark 40 years with 40 events

Mary with Colin and Christine Evans

2011 marks the 40th anniversary of Wakefield Samaritans. The charity, based in Charlotte Street, plans to hold 40 separate events throughout the year to mark the 40th year. The first event was a fundraising gala held in January, with the prize of lunch in Parliament being donated by local MP Mary Creagh.

Charity activists and Samaritan supporters, Colin and Christine Evans, won the prize and went to Parliament to watch the budget and climb Big Ben on 23rd March.

Mary said “I was delighted to be able to help Wakefield Samaritans raise vital funds so they can carry on their important work. They answer over 32,000 calls a year from vulnerable people in Wakefield. I’ll be working with them throughout the 40th anniversary year so people know the help that’s available.

“It was a pleasure to meet Colin and Christine who have worked with Wakefield Samaritans for many years.”

Christine Evans said “We had a great day in Parliament and want to thank Mary Creagh and Wakefield Samaritans for making it possible. The Samaritans in Wakefield are holding lots of events over the next few months including a Grand National Sweepstake, treasure hunts, and poetry nights. There are also coffee mornings at the Charlotte Street offices on every second Saturday of the month with a Tombola and book sales. They always need volunteers to help too so we are pleased to be able to raise awareness in this way.”

Founded in 1953, Samaritans was the very first helpline and the only one which has stood the test of time. Wakefield Samaritans opened its telephone lines in 1971. Callers, can telephone, email or visit the branch to talk face to face from 8am to 10pm every day.

Jane Hewitt, Director of Wakefield and District Samaritans said “We are very grateful to Mary for her help and support, especially for our first fundraiser of our 40th year celebrations. Working in Partnership with organisations both local and nationally, is a major part of our current program to raise the awareness of the services we offer.”

To find out more about upcoming events or to talk about becoming a volunteer, people can ring the Wakefield branch on 01924 377011.
