Mary meets actor and genocide prevention campaigner Clive Owen

Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Genocide Prevention, Mary Creagh MP, met with actor Clive Owen on 28th June, to highlight to the newly elected Parliament the importance of genocide commemoration and prevention.

The Aegis Trust, an International Genocide Prevention NGO, provides the secretariat for the Parliamentary group and arranged the event in the Houses of Parliament. Visit the Aegis website here =>

A key part of the event was to highlight the Rwandan genocide in 1994 when around 1 million people were slaughtered in just one hundred days. Both Clive and Mary are urging people to light a candle of hope for Rwanda to commemorate the victims. Visit the candles for Rwanda website here =>

Mary Creagh said "It was a privilege to attend the Candles for Rwanda event. I was delighted to meet Clive Owen, as well as the Director of Kigali Genocide Memorial, Freddy Mutanguha. Last year, Aegis and the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Genocide Prevention were instrumental in tightening UK law so that people accused of genocide or crimes against humanity since 1991 can be prosecuted in the UK. We are reforming the group in the new parliament and will continue to work to highlight and pursue genocide prevention measures.
