Culture Minister Hails Wakefield Attractions

Culture Secretary Ben Bradshaw visited Wakefield at Mary’s invitation on 19 November. He was given a tour of the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and Hepworth Gallery before visiting Lightwaves in the city centre.

The Secretary of State described the Hepworth as ‘a huge draw for people far and wide and a great educational facility for local children.’  

At Lightwaves he met young people and youth workers involved with BEAM (Boxing, exercise and anger management) and the Street Dance project. Wakefield’s Youth Service run the programmes which work with young people who have been excluded from school and who would not normally be involved in sporting activities.  

Mary said: "I was really happy that the Secretary of State found time to come to Wakefield to see what the city now has to offer culturally. He was impressed with what he found here.”
