Progress at Kirkgate
Mary visited Kirkgate station on 13 November to support police action to make the station safe.
Security arches, which detect concealed weapons, have been deployed in special police operations in the city. Wakefield Police are working alongside the British Transport Police to operate the portable detectors which are similar to those used in airports.
Mary said: I welcome the new temporary knife arches. People I spoke to were pleased at the high police presence.
We are seeing progress at Kirkgate. The subway will be upgraded and a new help point on platform 2 installed by March 2010. Also, following pressure from myself, Northern Rail has now agreed to fund a link between the CCTV cameras and the police CCTV centre. We need live CCTV monitoring and I will continue working to make sure this is in place as soon as possible.
