Missed opportunity for the Government to tackle rising water bills

Mary Creagh, Labour’s Shadow Environment Secretary, responded to the publication of the Government’s Water White Paper on 8th December. The government released the document, six months late, through a Written Ministerial Statement, but the Speaker called Ministers to the House of Commons after granting an Urgent Question to Mary Creagh. Mary said “The Water White Paper builds on Labour’s work to deliver a better deal for business customers, protect our rivers, and ensure a continuous supply of water as rainfall patterns change.

“The Tories’ botched water privatisation left South West residents facing the highest bills in the UK and we welcome the government’s offer of £50 a year off their bills. The 2.25 million households across the rest of the country who spend more than 5% of their income on water need a more robust approach from government and the water companies to ensure water remains affordable to all. Clearly we aren’t all in this together.”
