Food prices in the UK continuing to rise faster than elsewhere

Mary Creagh MP, Labour’s Shadow Environment Secretary, responded to the OECD figures on rising food prices on 2 November. She said “The Tory-led Government are out of touch with ordinary families and pensioners feeling the squeeze from higher food prices, rising energy bills and stagnant wages. British families have seen their food bills rise by 6.4 per cent over the last year, the second highest food price hike in the European Union.

“The Government needs to show leadership on food prices by bringing in a Groceries Code Adjudicator with real powers, working globally to tackle food commodity prices and getting a good deal for Britain in current discussion on reforming the Common Agricultural Policy.”

The UK now has the second highest food price inflation in the EU, just behind Hungary on 6.6%.
